In a personal letter received this week from Dr. David Beckman, President of Bread for the World, the first three paragraphs caught my eye. Though the purpose of the letter was for personal financial support, those paragraphs related to our Mission ! Campaign and the importance of the Offering of Letters to members of Congress. He wrote:
“Right now, Somalia is in the grip of gruesome hunger. Mothers are carrying their malnourished children long distances to emergency food—sometimes suffering the death of a child along the way.
“Yet our House of Representatives has voted to eliminate food aid rations for 14 million of the world’s most desperate people. They’ve also voted to cut agricultural development assistance—which is essential for breaking the cycle of recurring hunger in Africa.
“In fact, all programs that help hungry and poor people—in our country and around the world—are under attack in Congress.”
It will take intense effort to stop budget cuts that could hurt hungry children in God’s world. Our letters to those in Congress who hold the “Purse strings of the 2012 Federal Budget” can make the difference, literally, between life and death. Since less than 1% of the budget goes toward international aid to the poor, cutting anti-poverty programs, or even severely reducing them is “penny-wise and pound foolish.” Cutting safety-net programs doesn’t save money because it adds to costs in other areas of the budget.
Please take the time to write to our Congress-people: Senators Portman and Brown, Representatives Sutton and Kucinich. Sample letters and addresses are available in Pilgrim Hall. Also, please sign the letter we will be sending to them on behalf of the congregation.
Thank you for the support of the Mission 1 Campaign!
